SUMMARY:

Natural Sciences are an area of knowledge, comprising contents and concepts of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Sciences, among others. However, in school practice, the component of Natural Sciences is treated as a subject, especially in Elementary II. To teach the curricular component of Natural Sciences in elementary school, it is necessary to have a degree in Physics, Chemistry or Biological Sciences, although traditionally this curricular component has been taken on by biologists. The analysis of the curricular structures of the in-class Chemistry undergraduate course at UFRN pointed to a scarcity of subjects that deal with biology content. In this perspective, the present work had, as objective, the elaboration of a sequence of activities from a Socioscientific Issue and the proposition of a short course in order to contribute to the qualification of the Chemistry undergraduate students of UFRN with respect to the basic concepts of Genetics. The results obtained show that the participants of the short course presented quite variable performance in the proposed activities, which reinforces the need for subjects in the curricular structure of the future teachers and not only of short courses in an attempt to minimize the absence of Biology contents. However, we believe that the educational product produced here, that is, a sequence of activities to teach basic concepts of Genetics through a QSC that deals with the theme of the Anti-vaccination Movement is very interesting and relevant today and can be used in other contexts, such as by Science teachers.
