RESUMO:

Introduction: Women in the puerperal period present a series of physical, psychological and social changes. Both the content and the structure of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) allow to broaden the understanding and optimize the planning of physiotherapeutic interventions designed to maintain the functionality of these patients. Objective: to perform content validation regarding the main categories of the ICF to evaluate functionality of puerperal women from the perception of Brazilian physiotherapists. Methods: A study was carried out using Delphi methodology. The sample consisted of physiotherapists from the five regions of Brazil, with expertise in women's health. Three rounds with questionnaires were sent to participants. The first one involved the identification of relevant biopsychosocial aspects to the physiotherapeutic treatment of puerperal women. Two independent examiners analyzed the responses and linked to the ICF categories, with concordance among them evaluated by the Kappa coefficient. The following phases involved the confirmation of the categories and the consensus of the participants to elaborate the final list. The content validity index was calculated for each category separately and a minimum agreement of 0.80 was established for validation. Descriptive statistics were used to characterize the sample regarding sociodemographic data and professional experience. Results: The panel of experts was composed by 45 physiotherapists. From the professionals' perception, 1,261 significant concepts were identified that were associated to 258 different categories of ICF and personal factors. In this universe, 74 categories made up the initial list in the second round of Delphi. After the third round, the final list was validated by 89% agreement among the specialists, composed of 66 specific categories, 11 of body functions, 14 for body structures, 14 activity and participation, 18 environmental factors and 9 personal factors. Conclusion: This study concluded that 66 categories of ICF are the most relevant for assessing the functionality of women in the postpartum period, according to experts' perceptions, representing a useful tool in strengthening the biopsychosocial model of health care.
