RESUMO:

Introduction: The concept that each cerebral hemisphere is specialized for particular movement control functions is already a consensus in the literature. Unilateral brain lesions that compromise the left hemisphere have different clinical conditions from those that compromise the right hemisphere. Functional activities such as pointing and reaching objects have been used to assess motor performance in individuals with neurological sequelae. Range movement is regarded as a very important component for human movement, which requires the coordination of various segments of the upper limb to be performed. The aim of this study was to analyze, through clinical instruments, whether patients with right hemisphere lesion differ from left hemispheric lesion patients for range and grasp movement. Methodology: This is a simple blind observational study performed with patients who had had a stroke for more than six months and had unilateral impairment. Fifteen patients (nine with right lesions and six with left lesions) were selected, who were evaluated in the bilateral reach and grip movements through the Box and Block test (BBT), the Action Research Arm Test (ARAT) and the scale of Reach (REACH). Results: In the intra-group evaluation, statistical significance was found only in dynamometry for the right and left hemispheres with p-value 0.04 and 0.01, respectively. In the REACH-Distant Target range, a difference was found in the left hemisphere with p = 0.008. The intergroup assessment showed that there was difference in the BBT scales for right hemisphere right side versus left hemisphere side affected with p = 0.03. In the REACH-target distal to the right hemisphere sound side versus left hemisphere affected side with p-value 0.01; The ARAT presented difference in right hemisphere right side hemispheres left side affected hemisphere with a p-value of 0.04, and in dynamometry for the right hemisphere right side versus left hemisphere side affected with p-value 0.003, and for the right side hemisphere affected versus left hemisphere affected side presenting p-value 0.03. Correlation was performed between the scales used where a high correlation was found between the distant target REACH instruments and dynamometry (rs = 0.71), and a very high correlation with the distant target REACH scale and near target REACH (rs = 0.91).
