RESUMO:
Recovering the upper limb function post-stroke is one of the major concerns of those affected by the disease and also one of the greatest challenges for those who rehabilitate. Studies have shown that the therapist orientation to how the task should be performed may be the differential in achieving success during the rehabilitation process. One way for the therapist to facilitate the transmission of the verbal command is to use verbal cues for direction (focus of attention). Objective: To compare the influence of internal and external focus of attention on motor performance for reach and reach-to-grasp movements in upper limbs of post-stroke patients. Methods: The research was experimental, transversal and qualitative. Twelve patients with clinical diagnosis of stroke in the chronic phase and of both genders have participated of it. Patients were randomized in two groups and submit to initial evaluation to characterize the sample. The study was divided into two phases of a single day each (lasting approximately one hour), separated by the interval of one week, where each individual received a type of command, according to the group they were allocated; then this command was crossed between the groups. The tasks performed in the two groups were the same and consisted of reach and reach-to-grasp movements. Expected Results: verify which focus of attention allows improvement of upper limb performance in post-stroke patients.
